Could my horse barrel race?

I have a 9 year old quarter horse paint that I would really like to try to get to barrel race. I've done barrel racing before but not in a competitive level. We would really only do small rodeos or 4-h shows. This horse has amazing speed and is a descendent of Dash For Cash. He did have e.p.m a few years ago but has fully recovered from that. Do you think if would be safe to try barrel racing him?
