How do nuclear power plant designs in the united states differ from chernobyl ukraine's plant design?
USA nuclear plants have a protective concrete dome and are water cooled. Chernobyl was a bad design from the start. It was a graphite controlled reactor and like many old Soviet programs it was built without safety in mind to show they could build reactors comparable to the western countries. The control rods were a bad design and once the trouble started they could not be fully inserted to stop the runaway reaction. Additionally there were 4 reactors in the complex, close together with little to protect one from damage caused by another. Final toll was one reactor destroyed, one damaged. The people on duty at the time were not properly trained in its operation and emergency procedures.
