Prescriptions & living with a recovering addict?

I live with a recovering drug addict, and I just got in an accident and have a prescription for narcotic painkillers. This person knows I have them, and I know I have to keep them away from this person. I'm no longer in pain, so I don't need the drugs anymore, but I don't know if I should just toss them out. What should I do with them?
